Minnesota Association Success in Novel Eurasian Watermilfoil Treatment

A trial protocol employed by the Big Marine Lake Association (BMLA) seems to have been effective in the control of Eurasian watermilfoil. By applying multiple herbicide treatments within a 24-hour period (instead of spreading the treatments throughout the season), the Association achieved a roughly 75% reduction in treatment area; that is, while they had to treat 40 acres in 2016, the Association expects to treat as little as 10 in 2017.

And while other lake associations and the Department of Natural Resources have taken notice of BMLA's success (looking to employ similar methods of application in the future), BMLA is already moving towards another novel trial application this year. With grant funding from the Initiative Foundation, the Association hopes to design and use a lance which will allow scuba divers to directly inject herbicide into the root ball of Eurasian watermilfoil. The hope is that this method will allow for better control in areas where density is too minimal to justify a licensed application via traditional methods.
