Lady Bird Lake: Revisited

Location: Austin, TX

Problem: Harmful Algae (Cyanobacteria)

Lake and Pond Heroes: Brent Bellinger, Austin Watershed Protection Department; Ryan Van Goethem, EutroPHIX

Solution: EutroPHIX

Several dogs died from toxic algae contact around Red Bud Isle and Lady Bird Lake in Austin. Brent Bellinger and the Austin Watershed Protection Department realized the issue stemmed from high levels of phosphorus in the water. This was leading to toxic cyanobacteria growth in the water, posing a risk to dogs and humans around Austin. In this video, we revisit Austin three years later and find that recurring treatments of lanthanum modified bentonite have led to a vast reduction of the harmful biomass. Watch the video to hear more about these Heroes.
